How do you identify players that are better than their box scores?
um, it's a good question. I mean, I went with the first person that I think of right is probably like Dennis Rodman, just because there's a lot of intangibles that he would bring to the game that aren't going to show up in the box score. I mean, he's gonna usually take one of the best players on the court. There's really no statistical category for guarding the best possible player, Um, and just things like defending the pick and roll and, you know, just be willing to scrap and claw like all those little things that will never show up in a box score. Um, as far as a modern day player, I'm kind of drawn a blank of somebody that I would throw out there immediately. Yet is there anybody that you had in mind? Well, the question is, how do you identify players that and I think you just you just name some that are, um, the kind of the output of that process. But yet it's really hard to kind of put your finger on it because it's it's certainly like a bit of the eye test. It's bit of like this glue this unlocking this, um, on for me like it's generally been actually like, I've only really been good at this, feeling it, playing like I'm not very good at, just like looking at it, a za fan. And but there are guys guys on pickup basketball or whatever, where you just like you can't really put your finger on it. But they're just a trend. Incredible asset. And I had a guy like that in Seattle, and, like I just he wouldn't have been the first pick for most, you know, most teams. But the way he unlocked our pickup team was just incredible. Just versatile, large wingspan guarded a bunch of different players, un selfish, understood his role really well. And it's like I don't know, how the hell do articulate that unless you kind of like watching it living it and feeling it, and it feels like a very lame answer. But I think it's something about glue and sort of like watching them on unlock their teammates the next level. Well, yeah, absolutely. Um, every variable that you just talked about. I mean, those are all the things that should be considered when you're trying to identify a player that is better than their box score. Um, I think you're at I really don't have much to add because I think you're right on the head there. Uh, usually, it's something to as a player, if you're playing, you could just sense that that person is going to be doing the right thing, going to be taking the right shot, be making the right pass, playing the correct defense. And again, those things aren't really accounted for in the box score. But they're just as important as any statistical category you and I we've talked a lot about, like knowing your role and and how, like, kind of underrated, that is. And we've always joked we have a We have a good friend of ours that wanted to play basketball with us for cardio, and he was like, complete weightlifter. And it was like, Dude, like, I want to play basketball And we were like, Dude, if you honestly just play defense and rebounding, don't shoot like your teammates are gonna love you and it's like I don't know how. Articulate that into a stat. But it's like that, like, Hey, man, like I'm good at these two or three things, and I'm not going to try to be anything more than that I'm not. And really stepping into that like that feels like contributing a box store that I can't really put my finger on. But you know, the more that we've talked about it, and I do agree with that. But the more that we talked about it, I would like to think that probably the most important variable and you brought it up earlier is actually knowing your role and knowing how to play the game based on your skills. That and I think that is definitely an underrated aspect. And that's probably would be the number one thing for me identifying a player that are better than their statistics. And that's a zoo. We say this that's probably my One of my biggest weaknesses as a pickup basketball player is that I am I am J. R. Smith, and so I think that I'm always hot and but really, I need to be benched regularly. You know my role, but can't really bench someone during pick up. So learning some new every day I'm persona right? Just keep jacking. Yeah, might as well we'll be able to play the game forever somehow as well. Getting looks today right?
