Hiring a Head of Marketing for the 1st time (we have B2B and B2C marketing). Any quick takes on attributes to look for in a stellar head of marketing?
when we were looking for a head of marketing with Dolly, we kind of had a similar situation where we needed to do B two B marketing to retailers to get them to use Dolly deliveries, a service as well as B to C to actually get consumers to use our delivery service to get those goods home. And so for us, it was really important to think about someone that could obviously execute and operate on a small budget, given it was a startup in being crafty and thoughtful and resourceful on how to go executed and drive both of those fronts and then also someone that was able to kind of bring together some sense of brand and what we found in our process, talking to all different types of advisors that we were typically to find two types of head of marketing, one that was more creative in the kind of brand space and then the other. That was mawr in the quantum world of really driving kind of paid acquisition. So I would sort of prepare yourself to think about choosing between those two worlds and setting up your interview in your search in thinking about in that way. Which one do you need more? And then if you need to fill out a team around that person to balance out, let's say you hire a very strong creative, but maybe you need a better quant side. Make sure you have a budget in the thought process to balance those two things together. So for us, it was kind of this understanding of going into it and knowing that up front, and then the second part of that was really finding someone that we felt like. We thrive in a sort of environment because we found many, many kind of people who are eligible for marketing but worked with really, really established budgets and big corporations and had trouble sort of thinking about a very fluid budget and changing and things of that nature that we wanted in a startup world. So those were kind of my quick takes that we look for in a very long search for a head of marketing at Dolly. But we ended up landing on an awesome person in Kevin Shaver on the team. Mhm
